Alice Cartalet

Although I'm Small (ちっちゃくたって Chicchaku Tatte?) is the second episode of the anime adaptation of Kin-iro Mosaic.

Alice spends the day at school lamenting her short height whilst also developing a one-sided rivalry with their English teacher, Sakura Karasuma. Later, Alice goes on an outing with Shinobu and her friends Aya Komichi and Yoko Inokuma, before they try to figure out what to do for their future careers. Some awkwardness follows as Shinobu and the others assume Alice is homesick and try to help her out.

Synopsis

TiramiSubs KinMosa 2 1 morning

A few weeks have passed since Alice arrived in Japan. She thinks about it while observing some asian girls walking by and comments on how nice everyone has been. She then begins to water some plants until Shinobu tells her not to.

As they eat breakfast, Alice gives her opinion of Shino, then introduces everyone to Isumi, Shino's older sister, a model. The two girls then leave for school, where it seems Alice is still quite shy... but only with adults, and dogs!

They find Aya, who tells them that Yoko went on ahead. Alice then describes Aya, then moves onto Yoko when they reach school. They find her eating already and Aya comments on it while home room is beginning and Alice describes herself.

During break, Shinobu brings up Alice's age and she comments on how short she is. Causing her to wonder how old she is, which upsets Alice a little. Yoko deduces that she has a height complex and claims that she shouldn't since small girls are cute, which the others agree and they tell her that she has plenty of time to grow. But they begin to reconsider this when she informs them she's hardly grown since Elementary School.

This makes her upset, until she happens to notice how developed Yoko is and she asks about if she will still grow a chest due to being so small. Yoko claims that size doesn't determine that and she brings up Aya as an example, which makes her grow flustered and yell at her.

Later on class begins and they watch as Shinobu repeats "hello" over and over. They describe their teacher to her, and she watches with surprise as Shino fawns over her. Their teacher, Sakura, speaks to Alice and questions her English writing. Alice is still in a blank state while Shino claims her English is great. Which causes Alice to become more tense and claim that the teachers english needs work... but because she said it outloud in English, Sakura wants Alice to speak in english for the class and has her start to read for everyone.

During break again, Shinobu is telling Aya and Yoko about class while Alice plays with a little doll she was given. They then notice that Shino forgot her pencil case and while in the hallway, they explain to Alice what "Shino" is. They are approached by their teacher and Alice begins to tell her that she will be calling Shinobu "Shino", but everyone finds it cute and nice... which was not her desired effect at all!

Alice continues to play with the doll and they explain what a "moe" is.

Eventually school ends and Yoko arrives late to a meeting with Aya. She is frustrated by how late she is and claims she was there for an entire hour before expressing concern over the fact that alice and Shino haven't shown up yet, causing Yoko to wonder why she treats them differently...

They suddenly arrive and question what the heck she's wearing, guessing it to be a gothic lolita or maid uniform. Shinobu tells them its a foreign outfit though and they yell at her.

The four head to an arcade spot and watch as a guy wins something from a machine. When he sees how tranced by it Alice is, he ofers it to her and then leaves. The girls also check out a bunch of colored pens, sewing machines, and puppies. As they sit down the four spot a pair of foreigners and Shinobu has to get Alice to help her, to help them out while Aya and Yoko watch...

The next day at school they watch as Shino tries to read an english newspaper, but they can tell she cant understand it at all. Alice asks her if she has an interest in Europe, but Shino struggles with the locations being mentioned and attempts to draw something to help her figure it out.

Eventually school ends and the four remain, playing with Alice's hair and fixing it up. Shinobu admits she would love to dye her hair blonde after graduation, but none of them support it. She claims a blonde shade of brown, and Alice yells at her not to do it. Shino realizes they have a point, but she was hoping to resemble Alice. Alice makes an attempt to cheer her up, but once again refutes her idea of dying her hair blonde. Later on, Alice awakens from a dream where Shino dyed her hair blonde. Yoko brings Shinobo over to her, thinking it would calm her down.

The next day in class, Shinobu takes this time to ask their teacher why she became one to begin with. She claims she had been one before she really became one, but she thinks being a student is more fun... except for trying not to fall asleep. Which ends up making her tired...

Alice studies her paper they are given, about what they want to do with their futures but she admits that she never gave it much thought. Shinobu tells her not to worry, and to just think about who she wants to become at some point. This seems to help Alice, but she still has no ideas.

Yoko hasn't really finished either, but thinks it would be fun to become an idol. She claims to be lying, but Alice claims she thinks she would be good at it anyway. Then feels bad as Yoko tells her it's only a common Japanese joke. Shinobu tells them that she has finished however and reveals what she wrote down: an interpreter for foreigners!

Shinobu explains that Alice has been giving her lessons, so they challange her by making her speak in english. Shino struggles greatly and forces Alice to stop soon enough, so they walk away while Alice promises to speak slower.

Getting up then, Yoko tells Aya that she could imagine her writing down "bride", then notices she has started to erasing something and begins to yell and freak out. So Yoko keeps teasing her until she can't respond. She then flirts with her, causing Aya to hit her in response.

Later on they spot Alice deep in thought. They think she is homesick, staring out of the window. Unaware that she's actually just tired...

Because of that, the girls proceed to help her out throughout the day. Like answering for her, and picking up her dropped eraser. She heads into the hallway later and they offer to come with her.

In the faculty office, Alice has come with her journal. Sakura tells her that she came at just the right time, and when Alice tells her that she likes rabbits she puts a rabbit eared headband on her head. She then compliments Alice's work and she tells her how happy she is for her to have made friends and get used to Japan so far. Alice takes this time to think things over, then takes off while wondering what the girls think about her.

When she finds them again, she sees that they had begun to discuss their plans after leaving. Alice asks Shinobu for an honest opinion, wondering what they think about her. But when Shinobu misinterprets it as a love confession, this saddens Alice until she explains how special of a friend she is to her. This cheers Alice up and they wonder if she's over being homesick.

While on the way home they ask Alice why she chose to come here, and she says it was to be with Shinobu. Aya questions if this was a good enough reason, while Yoko comments that Alice must really care about Shino, and Shinobu tells her how much she missed her. So much that she was considering going to England when she got older, but since Alice came, her dream has come true...

The four girls then stand together while observing a plane. The mood is set, while they watch it and Alice wonders if it may be heading to England. When Aya then mentions it's probably just flying nearby though, Yoko scolds her for ruining the mood...
